Proper Post Abortion
Typical Recovery After you have an abortion make note that it is normal to experience the following:
- No bleeding post-abortion
- Expect your period in 4-8 weeks
- Disappearance of symptoms of pregnancy within a week
- Temperature of 100 degrees (slightly elevated)
- Passing of brown, black, or red blood clots
- Spotting that is inconsistent or consistent for 3 weeks post-abortion
- Cramping that causes back and/or abdominal pain due to the uterus contracting as well as the passing of blood clots *
- Moodiness, sudden mood changes, depression
- Discharge from the nipples
* Cramps are common post-abortion and can be remedied with a deep abdominal massage. A heating pad may also provide relief. You may find that non-aspirin pain relievers can help too.
Uncommon Recovery After an abortion there are certain symptoms that you do not want to experience. If you experience any of these systems without relief, you'll want to contact a health professional:
- Symptoms of pregnancy after 2 weeks
- No return of your period for more than 3 months
- Severe emotional and psychological trouble
- Passing of white, gray, or green tissue
- Extremely heavy bleeding that requires you to change a thick pad more than 3 times within 3 hours
- Tenderness in the abdomen area
- Painful cramps that keep you from doing normal everyday activities
- Temperature of 100.4 or more
- Spotting/bleeding that lasts for 3 weeks or longer

Self-care at Home At home there are a few things you'll want to do to keep yourself healthy and to allow for proper healing after an abortion. There are of course several dos and don'ts that you need to keep in mind. To dos
- Take your antibiotics as prescribed
- Rest as much as possible
- Monitor your temperature and make note if you have a high fever (100.4 or above)
- Avoid sexual activity
- Avoid using vaginal sprays/douches
- Use sanitary napkins and not tampons to avoid a UTI
- Eat foods that are high in iron-rich foods
- Drink a lot of water
Avoid
- Keep away from drugs and alcohol
- Avoid highly strenuous exercise for 2-5 days
