Proper Post Abortion

  Typical Recovery
After you have an abortion make note that it is normal to experience the following:

  • No bleeding post-abortion
  • Expect your period in 4-8 weeks
  • Disappearance of symptoms of pregnancy within a week
  • Temperature of 100 degrees (slightly elevated)
  • Passing of brown, black, or red blood clots
  • Spotting that is inconsistent or consistent for 3 weeks post-abortion
  • Cramping that causes back and/or abdominal pain due to the uterus contracting as well as the passing of blood clots *
  • Moodiness, sudden mood changes, depression
  • Discharge from the nipples

  * Cramps are common post-abortion and can be remedied with a deep abdominal massage. A heating pad may also provide relief. You may find that non-aspirin pain relievers can help too.

  Uncommon Recovery
After an abortion there are certain symptoms that you do not want to experience. If you experience any of these systems without relief, you'll want to contact a health professional:

  • Symptoms of pregnancy after 2 weeks
  • No return of your period for more than 3 months
  • Severe emotional and psychological trouble
  • Passing of white, gray, or green tissue
  • Extremely heavy bleeding that requires you to change a thick pad more than 3 times within 3 hours
  • Tenderness in the abdomen area
  • Painful cramps that keep you from doing normal everyday activities
  • Temperature of 100.4 or more
  • Spotting/bleeding that lasts for 3 weeks or longer

If you continue to experience these symptoms you will want to get in contact with us! You want to ensure that you are able to get the medical assistance that you need.
