First Trimester Abortions

There are many different types of abortions that can be completed during the first trimester of a pregnancy. The type of abortion a person receives is dependent upon how many weeks along they are in their pregnancy. Before an abortion can be completed, a doctor must first confirm the pregnancy and estimate how many weeks pregnant the patient is. Typically this is done with a sonogram.

  1st Trimester Options

A first trimester abortion is completed within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. Anytime a medication is used to eliminate the pregnancy, it is considered a medical abortion.

A drug known as “RU-486” is one option doctor’s use for those with seven to nine weeks gestation. There are certain hormones needed to sustain a pregnancy, this pill contains a hormone blocking agent which terminates the pregnancy causing the lining of the uterus to break down.

A drug called methotrexate may also be used. This type of treatment halts the process of the egg from implanting. This method is typically used on those with seven weeks gestation or less.

A second pill is given after RU-486 or methotrexate: misoprostol. This drug causes contractions which will empty the uterus.

Suction aspiration may be used from six to twelve weeks gestation. This procedure is also known as suction curettage or vacuum aspiration. This is considered a surgical abortion.

A medical professional will be able to answer questions regarding any procedure or drug and can assist in determining which method is right for each patient’s situation.
