Aspiration Methods for Abortion

A common method used for abortion is the removal of contents through the cervix by vacuum or suction aspiration. These procedures are done five to twelve weeks after the last menstrual period and are effective and safe if done by a medical professional. Surgical abortions done during the first trimester are referred to as one of the safest surgical procedures available and serious complications are extremely rare. The rate of infection is also lower than other surgical abortion procedures. Abortions typically do not hinder a woman’s ability to bare children in the future. The vacuum aspiration method is used for: abortion, miscarriages or biopsies.

With the machine vacuum procedure, a tube called a cannula is inserted into the uterus. The other end of the tube is attached to a pump and a bottle. A soft suction gently removes tissue from the uterus. The procedure takes fifteen minutes or less. The tissue removed is examined to ensure all necessary tissue has been taken out and that the abortion is complete. If it is discovered that all of the tissue has not been removed, a D&C or dilation and curettage may be necessary. With this procedure a sharp surgical instrument is used to scrape and clean remaining tissue from the uterus.

Another abortion procedure is called the manual vacuum or mini-vac. This technique involves using a hand held syringe. The manual vacuum is as safe and effective as the machine vacuum procedure however, it is not widely available in the United States.
